Suffering Leads to Perseverance – Romans 5:3

This week has been difficult, dealing with my son’s illness and trying to finish get through work deadlines. I worry whether I’m doing everything I can to be the provider, husband, and father my family needs. But I don’t get to decide what opportunities and problems life will bring. It’s not up to me to choose what kind of week I’m going to have.

Paul reminds me that it’s times like this when faith is strengthened and refined into something that endures. I’ve asked God many times to strengthen my faith like the father who cried out in Mark 9:24, “Lord, I believe; help my unbelief.”  Well, here is the moment I prayed for. Nothing tests a man’s faith more than caring for his children while they are sick.

Like a life raft, my faith in Jesus helps me stay afloat. I’ve realized I can’t get through this through willpower alone. Instead, I’m choosing to let go of any semblance of control I thought I had, put my trust in Jesus, and believe in His promises.  I know His plans for my family and me are perfect. I will learn to rejoice in these times, not because I’m strong, but because I trust God. He is building up my faith and teaching me to persevere through this.
